Disaggregating Civility: Politeness, Public-Mindedness and Their Connection

Abstract Calls for civility feature prominently in public discourse, and the concept has received growing attention by political philosophers recently. But what does it mean to be civil? The existing literature distinguishes between two main understandings of civility: as politeness public-mindedness. objective this article is show that these conceptions different normative claims associated with them can all fit together. We argue incivility should disaggregated order uncover fruitful connections aspects concept. introduce a distinction dimensions public-mindedness (moral justificatory), well new means ends civility. examine complex (in)civility disaggregation tells us kind matters, when why.
